10 Free Things

At the back of each NEA Today magazine is a list of resources called "10 Free Things": a list of activities, posters, printables, lessons, videos and more.  There is also an online version that you can access here. 

For example, you can sign-up with your school email and access an ebook called "20 Free iPad Apps for Educators."

• Financing Insights: Canby teachers have money available in iTunes and through Apple's VPP (Volume Purchasing Program) for resources.  District has centralized purchasing, leasing teacher machines.  IT dept. has  setup a 3 year lease on laptops through Apple/GE Capital for $150K a year for teachers; district has a few desktop labs for testing (Think Clients - mostly old machines).  IT dept. has Innovation Grants that teachers can apply for, after taking an action research class and present what they've learned.

We hear so much about bloom's taxonomy. Making sure students are using higher order thinking skills. This site has a few imagines that show which apps relate to the different levels of bloom's taxonomy. These are iPod and iPad apps!

ITSC 2012: The Textbook Reinvented for the iPad

The Textbook. Reinvented for the iPad.

iBooks 2 (simply update if you've already downloaded this app) is now available from the App Store with textbooks (+ samples) priced at $14.99 or less.  These text books are formatted as an "end use" license redeemed by individual students (i.e. "consumable" like a workbook) not "shared use" license.  This means that the student "owns" the book, not the educational institution.  Publishers may release Teacher Editions with additional resources separately; the editions will, again, need to be purchased separately.

iPads in School Blog

Found this blog while reading a US News & World Report Article over the summer.  iPad in Schools not only provides commentary on the current and future states of technology in education, but also breaks down iPad App suggestions and activities by elementary, middle, and high school levels.   

iPad Apps for Education

So this post is for those lucky enough to have an iPad for your classroom.  I took one home over the summer and had a blast with it!  I've made some great discoveries that I will share in future posts.  In the mean time, here are some great videos on basic apps for classroom and educational purposes!  Enjoy!
