Learn 360
Hey Everyone!
I REALLY miss Discovery Educations's video selection. If you loved Discovery Education videos, you'll probably really like Learn 360. They provide basically the same service but for a much cheaper price: 30 cents per student per year. I found these guys at ITSC and got pretty excited!

ITSC 2012: Final Thoughts
So there are a lot of thoughts and ideas and what-ifs swirling around in my cranium right down which means I won't be very concise with this final post from the Airport Sheraton in Portland, but I know as soon as I leave the parking lot my brain will be switching gears to the list of non-ITSC things.
So here's what I got...
iBOOKS
I'm still reeling from Apple's Session on Sunday. This is going to change everything. I can't wait to turn some of my classroom materials into an ePub.

- Financing Insights: Canby teachers have money available in iTunes and through Apple's VPP (Volume Purchasing Program) for resources. District has centralized purchasing, leasing teacher machines. IT dept. has setup a 3 year lease on laptops through Apple/GE Capital for $150K a year for teachers; district has a few desktop labs for testing (Think Clients - mostly old machines). IT dept. has Innovation Grants that teachers can apply for, after taking an action research class and present what they've learned.

Redesigning Education: Digital Literacies and the Future of Learning
Presented Craig Watkins ~ Speech Highlights
Presented Craig Watkins ~ Speech Highlights
- Author of The Young & the Digital, partner with the MacArthur Foundation
- One of the questions we should as ourselves is how are students learning in the digital age? Learning is happening in so many different places, not just in schools.
- The degree to which students are using social media/network sites are two fold: friendship driven and interest driven.
- Students will need a set of Hard and Soft Skills to be considered Digitally Literate: networking, multitasking, crowdsourcing, demonstrate technical and media skills, collect, interpret, and curate data, understand the difference between private and public profiles, digital citizenship, and multi-modal communication.

ITSC 2012: Getting Social with Students
Getting Social with Students
Presented by Jeff Utecht
Presented by Jeff Utecht
- We live in a world where there is no boundary between our work life and our social life.
- Individuals have a need to be connected.
- We know there's no way we can tell kids they can't bring cell phones to school - almost 70% of text messages during the school day are between parent and child, not kid to kid.
- We all feel the pressure to stay connected, to stay up to date, to get things done.
How do we start using this medium with kids?

ITSC 2012: Today's Meet
www.TodaysMeet.com
A conversation site - everyone logs in and everyone can comment. It is like a closed chat room. Super cool tool. Everyone logs into a "chat" with their name, no need to create an account just go to your chat site and enter your name to join a chat.
Make sure you kids know the rules. Students need to learn the etiquette for the internet. How to ask questions, how to direct questions/comments to one person. Close the laptop if they can’t handle it. The skills they learn here (etiquette) they can transfer to twitter and other social networking sites.
IDEAS FOR USE
-Chat with another classroom in the district
-When watching a movie have the class type the facts they learn, then you have a collection of notes by your whole class
-Notes from lectures, as you lecture have the kids type in notes, then you have a collection of notes by your whole class. You can save the notes for up to a year.
-Spelling words --- have kids type words and then all hit “say” together, great way to practice spelling words
