ITSC 2012: Creating and Distributing Content and Activities for iPad and iPod Touch

Creating and Distributing Content and Activities for iPad and iPod Touch

Workshop resource: http://wiki.canby.k12.or.us/groups/itsc/

  • Financing Insights: Canby teachers have money available in iTunes and through Apple's VPP (Volume Purchasing Program) for resources.  District has centralized purchasing, leasing teacher machines.  IT dept. has  setup a 3 year lease on laptops through Apple/GE Capital for $150K a year for teachers; district has a few desktop labs for testing (Think Clients - mostly old machines).  IT dept. has Innovation Grants that teachers can apply for, after taking an action research class and present what they've learned.
    • Every 3rd Grader across Canby district has access to an iPod touch.  Most classrooms have iPads as well.    Assigned student email to all students through Google Apps.
      • Canby has a segmented network: Facebook is blocked, but Youtube is open.  Moved from a Class C to a Class A networking range - only one level of access instead of tiered between administrators, teachers, and students.   G5 at every school, local telecom runs switch.
    Edmodo

    • Download Edmodo App from iTunes App Store
    • Create a group for students and teachers to join.  It's free.
    • The Edmodo Library (at the top of the screen) is a great place for you to upload content and then push information out to your students.  It is a private library, unless you create a Folder and make that folder public to share with students/groups.  There is unlimited space to store on Edmodo.
    • Edmodo app allows limited content upload from the iPad (hopefully this will change with the next iPad OS upgrade).
    • You can create and distribute content (like videos from Youtube) through a site like Edmodo without creating, converting, and syncing the content which is time consuming.  Teachertube, Vimeo, Youtube, Learn360 are all compatible (i.e. Linkable) to Edmodo.
    • If you want to upload a video from your iPad: go to Youtube from Safari (not the Youtube App).  Select and copy the video's address.  Open the Edmodo app.  Paste link into a new post.  If it doesn't load, you may need to change settings to allow "mobile" versions of page addresses.
